Many toaster oven reviews treat this handy, all-purpose small appliance as a multi-function toaster. That is, they rate the consistency of “browning” and the number of slices it holds is discussed, but many other great features are left in the dark.
Ironically, toasting bread is the least useful activity you can perform with a toaster oven. A toaster oven is used for so much more than toasting bread. In fact, Unless you’re cooking for a large group, it’s very tedious to toast bread in a toaster oven. That’s because it takes up to ten minutes to make toast in a toaster oven. That is almost twice as long to toast bread in a toaster oven than a regular toaster!
For the energy-conscious, this is a nightmare of inefficiency. For the rest of us, it’s a long, slow, tedious wait in the morning, just to get a slice of toast.
Therefore, we’ll begin this, second in our series of toaster oven reviews, by saying straight out:
If all you need is to toast bread or bagels, stick with a regular toaster. If you want an auxiliary oven that can do many things and save you time and money on your utility bills, go for a toaster oven.

Types of Toaster Ovens
Infrared Toaster Ovens
Considered specialty ovens or a specialty feature, infrared toaster ovens use infrared technology to cook food…heat is transferred directly to the food (regular ovens heat the air around the food to cook it). They save on energy and there’s no preheating required, pretty nifty.
Infrared cooking also cooks food 50% faster and you don’t have to defrost frozen food. It’s also very good at crisping. The machines in our toaster oven reviews below are not infrared toaster ovens.
Rotisserie Toaster Ovens
These come with an attachment that holds meat and spins it slowly as it cooks. The machines in our toaster oven reviews below are not rotisserie toaster ovens.
Convection cooking forces air around the oven to cook food more efficiently. They save up to 50% of energy over regular ovens.
Factors to Consider When Buying The Best Toaster Ovens
Your typical oven capacity is .5 cubic feet, and can hold 4-6 slices of toast. If you want to roast a chicken or cook a 12-inch pizza, look for the one that’s slightly larger: 3/5 cubic foot (.6 cubic foot) is enough for those purposes.
Your basic toaster oven will bake, broil and toast. The best toaster oven, on the other hand, will also do the following:
- fit a 12″ pizza
- fit a dozen cookies
Your average toaster oven should last you about 5 years. A top toaster oven from a high end manufacturer, on the other hand, should last you quite a bit longer.
Most toaster oven reviews will tell you to look for consistent browning, for those occasions when you will toast bread. This can be expanded: look for an oven which has consistent heating during baking as well. The best toaster oven will have very few hot spots so as to deliver even cooking.
The best toaster oven for you will have the features you need without making you pay for features you don’t want. That’s why it’s wise to do your research first- our toaster oven reviews are designed to give you all the pointers you need to make a smart purchase. Here’s a handy list of features to consider when searching for your top toaster oven:
- Interior Light
- Automatic Shutoff
- Cool Touch Exterior
- Automatic Ejection Tray
- “Ready” Sound Alert
- LED Indicators
- Slide out tray
- Multiple Racks
- Nonstick or Porcelain Interior
- Easy Cleanup

The smallest of Breville’s hugely popular Smart Oven series, the Mini Smart Oven contains all the features of Breville’s top toaster oven (see below) but in the tiniest size for small kitchens. The 0.45 cu ft. interior makes it perfect for your urban apartment, beach house or dorm room. The 450 XL has a beautiful powder coated steel exterior that fits with any design. Gorgeous good looks are only the beginning, however. Premium level features include:

Mainly size…toaster oven reviews will all tell you that the larger the oven, the more it costs. But you’re also giving up a broil pan, pizza pan and other non-essentials like a silver color, auto-eject wire rack and one less pre-set function than the full size model. The basics:

Breville BOV650XL Compact Smart Toaster Oven Review
When look at the best toaster oven, you get what we like to call “genius features”, which are elements of design so perfect and useful they simply make cooking a pleasure. One of these is the LCD screen on the Smart Oven series. Like all the Smart Ovens, the back-lit LCD screen is orange during cooking and magically turns blue when your food is done. Another great thing about the LCD: you can change the number of slices of bread you’re toasting on the readout, and the oven will adjust its setting to brown them evenly and perfectly every time. Now that’s a premium feature. This BOV650XL model is the medium-sized Smart Oven:
- 3/5 cubic foot capacity
- 12″ pizza
- 3 rack positions
- 8 pre-set functions
- This Smart Oven comes with 10×10 inch enamel baking pan & 10 x 10 inch enamel broil rack.

- One-side toasting function.
- Pizza function.
- Cookie function.
- Reheat function.
There’s a handy rack position helper stamped on the front glass of the oven door. This essentially takes the guessing out of how to cook most items. It’s just one more example of intuitive design you’d expect from a top toaster oven like this one. Here’s another: the temperature conversion button converts Fahrenheit to Celsius.
